Office be asked that in the event of any alterations being
made in the place names enfaced on the map these altera-
tions should be indicated on the registers mentioned in
paragraph 7 of my despatch referred to above, which regis-
ters are to be returned here for printing.

I have no doubt the War Office realise that
maps of China can only be used by a traveller to find his
way by enquiring the road to places marked on them if these
places are shown in Chinese
characters either on the map
or in a register of the names on it. In this connection I
enclose a minute by Mr. C. Clementi of the Hongkong Civil
Service who is a Chinese Scholar and has travelled in
various parts of China.
